Bear Flat
Bear Flat is an agricultural area along Highway 29N, 30 km (18 miles) west of Fort St. John. Located on the north side of the Peace River, the community began at the mouth of Cache Creek. Except where topographical constraints exist, the land is within the Agricultural Land Reserve and contains prime agricultural land, some of the more productive land in the region. Parcels are of varying sizes and are mixed between private and Crown provincial land.
Settlers came to Bear Flat starting in the 1910's by the D.A. Thomas steamboat that traveled the Peace River. These early residents shared the land with local aboriginals. Trapping was the predominate economic activity until yields began to decrease and there was sufficient population in Fort St. John to haul garden produce to market. A school opened in 1922 in a 660 square foot log building.
