Buick

Buick is a rural farming area situated 80 km (50 miles) north of Fort St. John.  Located north of the Peace River Block line, it stretches from the Beatton River to the east and Blueberry River to the west.  In earlier times the area was called “The Blueberry”.  The present name originated when Texaco drilled gas well #1 on Amos Pyle’s property in the Buick Creek watershed, in what is now known as the Buick Creek Field.  The community is populated mostly by farmers, with the community center located at Mile 18 of the Beatton River Road where there is a general store, a post office, an elementary school, an inter-denominational church, a community hall and a service station.

The community hosted the Buick Creek School from March 1963 to June 1969 when it was moved and consolidated with Mile 18 School.  The consolidation resulted in a new school named Buick Creek Elementary and Junior Secondary School and included a gymnasium. The Buick Creek Nursing Station opened in the fall of 1977.  Its clinic was open during the day for routine visits but was also equipped for emergency treatment, home care, counseling, case management, school visits and pre- and post-natal visits.  The Buick Creek Community Hall was built, mostly by donations of material and labour, in the fall of 1981.  Community groups have included 4-H Clubs and a Women’s Institute.

Blueberry Bible Camp had its humble beginnings in 1981 in a leaky tent, before moving into fourteen BC Rail trailers in 1984. When Buick got its new log church, the old one was moved to the Blueberry Bible Camp.  The Buick Gospel Mission’s inter-denominational church services were held in a private home, then the school before the congregation had the Wonowon church moved to the community.
