East Pine
The community of East Pine, located at the confluence of the Murray and Pine Rivers, is approximately 27 km (16 miles) east of Chetwynd. Small lots, subdivided in 1947, sit on the western hill above the floodplain while another subdivision, from 1960, sits lower to the river. Highway 97 and a rail line climb the hills on either side of the river and traverse over it by bridges. On the flatter land on top of the hills, there are agricultural fields that are included in the Agricultural Land Reserve.
Settlers came to East Pine where the wagon trail ended and a pack trail began as people migrated westward. The rivers could only be crossed when they were low enough to ford or frozen enough to walk across. Residents operated small basket ferries before the government installed a cable ferry in 1941 to help travelers cross with supplies. The 700 foot long (100 feet high) East Pine Bridge opened while the Hart Highway was still under construction. The highway connecting Chetwynd and Dawson Creek opened in 1952. A rail bridge was built beside the East Pine Bridge a few years later.
