Farmington / Parkland
Farmington is approximately 37 km (23 miles) northwest of Dawson Creek, located near the junction of Parkland Road and the Highway No. 97N. The parcels consist of mostly quarter-sections; however, the highway and watercourses divide some of the parcels. The Kiskatinaw River flows eastward in the northern end of Farmington. Coal Creek and its tributaries flow northeastward through the middle of the community. Most of the land immediately adjacent to the watercourses is forested or not cleared. Much of the remaining land is used for agricultural operations such as cereal crops, forage crops, cattle, sheep and swine.
A wave of settlement came to Farmington in the 1920s when Canadian soldiers acquired land through loans from the Soldier Settlement Board. Earlier settlers such as Jimmy Matthews, J.H. Barringham and Stewart Trail, came to this area and mined coal along Coal Creek. Mary Trail was the first post mistress when the post office opened in July 1935. The post office service still remains today, but offered by the Farmington general store. In 1977 a community hall was built and the Parkland Elementary School was opened, which currently provides education up to grade 7. While the community has about 200 people, children from nearby communities use the school so school attendance has been at about 90 to 98 children between 2001 and 2003.
