2009 - 2010 Peace River Regional District
Rural Official Community Plan

Kilkerran

The area Kilkerran, also known as Saskatoon Creek, flanks both side of the Saskatoon Creek watercourse which meanders eastward, meeting with the Rolla Creek and emptying into the Pouce Coupe River. The community is several miles north of the city of Dawson Creek, but east of the Alaska Highway.  This area consists of predominately quarter-section parcels within the Agricultural Land Reserve.

The area was settled starting in 1912. The original name ‘Saskatoon Creek’ derived from the abundance of saskatoon berries that grew naturally around the creek. A school was built a couple years later. When a post office was established in the community in 1920, the more austere sounding name ‘Kilkerran’ was chosen. The community grew large enough to support a community hall and a Dawson Co-op branch store. The post office, school and store eventually left as Dawson Creek grew, but the community hall was restored in the 1960s.
