Lemoray / Pine Valley
Along the Pine River, flanked by mountains, there are several flats upon which homesteads have been developed. This stretch of land is located east of the Pine Pass and 45 km (28 miles) west of Chetwynd. Settlers trickled into this area from the east until the John Hart Highway (BC Highway 97) was constructed in 1952 along the mountains and on the flats. This new highway, along with a rail line, went through the Rocky Mountains and connected the BC Peace Region with the interior of the province. Development of coal between this area and Tumbler Ridge began in the 1980s. The District of Chetwynd incorporated one of the mines, just south of the river, as a satellite property. Since then there have been less residential homesteads and more industrial activity, serving the coal and highway uses.
