2009 - 2010 Peace River Regional District
Rural Official Community Plan

Lone Prairie

Lone Prairie is a valley surrounded by Mount Wartenbe to the north and Tuskoola Mountain to the south. The valley has long been used for ranching. The community of less than 200 people is bound on the eastern side by the Murray River and divided by Cowie Creek. The prairie is flat, cleared and cultivated for crops, cattle and grazing.

After the Aboriginal people left Lone Prairie to live in the Moberly Lake area, permanent settlers began to arrive, beginning in 1918. As more families moved in the Lone Prairie School was built in 1932 with help from a sawmill in Fellers’ Heights. The school closed in 1936 as several families moved away and the log building was converted into a house. Since then, much of the land was cleared to raise cattle. A community hall was built but has since been abandoned.
