Pink Mountain
Pink Mountain is a rural farming area situated 125 km (78 miles) northwest of Fort St. John. At mile 143 of the Alaska Highway, the community has a general store which houses the post office and liquor store. Across the highway is the Motor Inn Hotel. Further up the Alaska Highway at Mile 147 and near the Beatton River, is a restaurant, pub, and another hotel. The community of less than 100 people is populated mostly by ranchers, some of which also work in the oil and gas industry. Agriculture is the main stay of the area together with oil and gas exploration and logging, all of which help employ some during the winter season.
Cypress School opened in September 1977; it remained open through June 1991. The doors opened to twenty-four elementary students and four junior secondary correspondence students. It eventually consisted of kindergarten through to and including grade 10. The building consisted of a double wide trailer, which was located near the confluence of Cypress Creek and the Halfway River. There was a 4-H Horse Club, Stockman’s Association, Cypress Creek Cattleman’s Association, and still is a Pink Mountain Community Club.
