2009 - 2010 Peace River Regional District
Rural Official Community Plan

Shearerdale

The community of Shearer Dale, consisting of about 40 people, is located about 6 km (4 miles) north of Doe River, along the Rolla Road. It is 42 km (26 miles) north and east of Dawson Creek, and has the Alberta border to its east. The deeply incised Kiskatinaw River to the west and Peace River to the north bound the community. On Shearerdale’s side of the confluence of the two rivers, the Kiskatinaw River Protected Area covers 198 ha (489 acres) of grassland and open hillsides. An 11 ha (27 acre) portion of the Clayhurst Ecological Reserve falls on Shearerdale’s side of the Peace River, at the border with Alberta. Otherwise Shearerdale’s land is flat, made up of mostly quarter-section sized parcels, and used for agriculture, mostly grain, cattle and forage.

Shearerdale was settled by homesteaders, including many war veterans, as Doe River expanded. The community is named after one of the first settlers, Bob and Ann Shearer, who moved to the area from Manitoba in 1928. The Shearers were well-known in the area as they hosted many newcomers and Ann became a member of the Pouce Coupe hospital board. Other community-minded pioneers included William and Anne Burton who built the school and several other buildings, Alf Williams who installed a heater and a blackboard in the school, and Joseph Crosbie who once operated a post office and general store in the community. Also of note, Joseph Crosbie Jr. from Shearerdale served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly representing the Peace River electoral district from 1945 to 1949.
